-genic 2026

-genic stems from the question ‘What does scientific data become when we remove its context?’. It explores this through multiple ‘steps’; a cross stitch pattern, jacquard punch cards, a piano keybed, and an electronic typewriter. Starting with a handwritten data pattern, each ‘step’ takes data from its predecessor and transmutes it into a new form. Throughout the work’s run, the artist will ‘clock in and out’ to change aspects of the work. The mind numbing repetition of an act mirrors that of the women who, because of their roles in textiles, became human computers and calculators. -genic also supplies the artist’s workings as part of the piece, offering an insight to the uniformed viewer into the work’s seemingly random workings.
